Bessie Blount Griffin: The Quiet Force Who Restored Independence

In today’s moment in Women's History, we will highlight Bessie Blount Griffin, born November 24, 1914, in Hickory, Virginia, and who left us on December 30, 2009.

A Black nurse and physical therapist during World War II, she watched wounded soldiers struggle with everyday tasks and decided she could do something about it. With her own hands, she created a portable receptacle support that let bedridden patients eat and drink without help, earning U.S. Patent 2,550,554 in 1951. She followed it with an electric self-feeding device for amputees, giving them dignity and freedom at mealtime.

Later, she became a respected forensic handwriting expert. Her inventions weren’t flashy…they were simply acts of love that changed lives.

Remember…Education is FREEdom of mind and never should be colorblind.
