Walk with Purpose: A Call to My People

There’s a unique strength that runs through us…a resilience embedded in our history, our culture, and our collective journey. As African Americans, we are living proof of overcoming obstacles, of enduring hardships, and of rising time and time again. But today, more than ever, it’s essential that we walk with purpose.

Walking with purpose means moving through life with the knowledge that you are not just here by chance; your presence is intentional, your steps have meaning. Each action, each word, each choice carries weight. Our ancestors fought, struggled, and dreamed for the opportunities we have now, and we honor their legacy by refusing to walk through life without direction.

Purpose is our shield in a world that often seeks to define us in limiting ways. When we walk with purpose, we refuse to shrink into spaces that were never made for us. We create our own lanes, shape our own narratives, and inspire others to do the same. Walking with purpose is a rebellion…a declaration that we are not just surviving but thriving, defining our own futures.

But let’s be honest…it’s not always easy. The pressure of systemic challenges, the weight of generational trauma, and the overwhelming distractions of modern life can make it feel like the path ahead is foggy. One of the biggest distractions we face today is the temptation to focus on fleeting trends, such as social media challenges or viral dances, that don’t always align with our greater purpose.

While it’s fun to take part in viral trends, it’s crucial we don’t lose sight of our deeper responsibilities. Too many of us are quick to master the latest dance moves or jump on the newest social media challenge, yet we struggle to understand the power of our own history, culture, and identity. Some of us invest hours into learning choreography, but fall short when it comes to mastering the lessons of our ancestors, understanding our roots, or empowering ourselves with education.

The challenge is to balance both…to be able to enjoy and participate in popular culture without forgetting the foundation on which we stand. We must prioritize our education, our growth, and our self-awareness, and apply that same energy and commitment to learning about our history, our rights, and our potential. It’s about understanding the past so that we can confidently walk into the future.

Purpose isn’t about perfection. It’s about intentionality, presence, and persistence. It’s about knowing that even on your hardest days, the fact that you’re here is a testament to your strength. So, stand tall. Speak with conviction. Walk with the wisdom of those who came before you and the hopes of those who will come after.

We are the change we seek.

We are the legacy we inherit.

We are the future we are building.

Walk with purpose…not just for yourself, but for the culture, for your ancestors, for the generations to come.
